⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Boy what an incredibly horny game world please ✨😍🎮 Rapture is still one of the most fascinating settings for me. A once magnificent underwater utopia in Art Deco style that has now deteriorated into a completely fucked up nightmare. Everywhere flickering neon lights, insane inhabitants and the remains of a society that has perished by its own megalomania. This environmental storytelling alone is already ABSURD good. 🏠🏀 But what really caught me is social criticism. Andrew Ryan’s Rapture is Ayn Rand’s objectivism as a failed social experiment. A world in which individual freedom and economic success should prevail over everything, until it turns out that freedom without social responsibility benefits above all those who already possess power. ADAM in particular makes this criticism so terrifyingly topical. A substance that optimizes the human body while creating a complete dependency economy. Progress becomes a commodity, people become usable resources and even children are forced into this cycle as Little Sisters. The Big Daddies, even deprived of their autonomy, in turn protect this very system. This is already a rather perverse form of exploitation and unpleasantly reminds me of our current fixation on self-optimization and profit maximization. 💀 And the horny thing is that as a player you become part of this logic, because ADAM is also needed for your own progress. I found incredibly clever (not like me who is writing this review right now in college lol) In terms of gameplay, you notice the thing its almost 20 years of course, especially the gunplay is partly a bit hakelig. But the possibilities of experimenting with plasmids, weapons and the environment still make Bock right. Powering opponents in the water, hacking security systems and using the whole environment against them? GREEN 😭 You also have to imagine that BioShock came out in 2007, when military shooters increasingly dominated the genre. And then Ken Levine comes around the corner with a dystopian underwater city, a rather biting critique of capitalism and a story about the illusion of free will. The latter is solved narratively so incredibly clever that I really can only recommend everyone to go in as blindly as possible. 🏶 Small weaknesses in gunplay or not, for me one of the few games in which the socio-political questions remain in mind long after the credits. Would you kindly play this masterpiece? ❤️ 🎮 The game is for you if... - you love atmospheric game worlds and environmental storytelling - you have to go for social criticism, philosophical questions and moral dilemmas - you like to experiment with different builds, plasmids and creative combat possibilities 💀 The game is NOTHING for you if... - you expect modern, butter-soft gunplay Backtracking and partially repetitive enemy waves annoy you - you can do little with dark settings and a rather indirectly told backstory
