It is really hard for me to give Atomfall an exact star rating, because the game was a lot of fun but also frustrated in many places. At its core, it is a really (graphically) beautiful action game with deep lore and interesting locations. On the other hand, there are already so many negative points that you want to switch off as a casual gamer or friend of storygames. I made a few notes while playing: - Opponents stubbornly run towards one: This is the only tactic that the opponents know, either the brawlers run towards you to simply be shot down or the rangers stubbornly stop and shoot pinpoint at 100m the player. - When crouched, body disappears in the ground: should not fit in a first person game if you can see yourself. - see a lot of mysteries at the beginning, no management: This has led me to lower the difficulty level, you can explore as you want, but a few places are already planned for the lategame, which I painfully noticed in the next point. You really have to be able to read the documents and interpret clues to find the quest markers. This can be fun but I perceive it, especially at the beginning, as very laborious. - softlocked in the medical sector after 7h: right here was the punk where I was shortly before the game was cancelled. The medical sector is full of strong opponents, poisonous plants and even more mysteries. After some exploration time, I was there after about 7 hours and softlocked because I lacked potions with which I become immune against the plants. In one aisle I was given the choice between "with 10hp die of poison if I go forward and with 10hp die of radiation if I go backwards". I had to cheat with a coach because otherwise I could have thrown away several hours of progress. - AA very lean, everything flickers: self-explanatory. - there are so many boxes etc that you just can not loot: there are maybe 10 items that you can loot in total and 4 of them are superfluous. Why do you design boxes and containers in such a way that as a player you might think you can loot them, only so that there is nothing in them. Often the loot is just nonsense at the end of the dungeons and after slaughtering hordes of opponents you find a rope and bread (which regenerates 5% HP) - Enemies spawn after 2025: Biggest nonsense in the entire game, both in reloads of memory (after killing all opponents) and in direct combat, spawn opponents, partly in the field of view. I thought we would have left that in 2013. - But the game world looks great: The game world is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, plus nuclear case. Each of the five areas looks great and requires different tactics in approach, both from the quests and from the opponents. Truly immensely successful lighting puts the world in a, literally good light. Moreover, Atomfall has probably the most realistically constructed village in a non-fantasy RPG. - It would have been cool if the dungeons had also content, except beautiful graphics and also an info about whether the dungeon is cleared, would have been good. - The game continues in the menu and on the map, why if it is a single player game? - Stealth is a mainstay of the gameplay but it only works so lala: sometimes an opponent mocks hundreds of meters through a small slot in the terrain and alerts the whole map, sometimes you can see the dental plaque and they do not care. In addition, the stealth skills are not very useful and there is only a stealth takedown anyway. Despite the criticisms above, I ended up having fun with Atomfall. What is it about? Probably really about the very good and profound story and the dearest characters you meet there. The gameplay loop is predictable but still fun enough to see over the immense shortcomings. It is simply motivating to always explore new areas and solve the mysteries yourself, without using the easier difficulty level. At some point you are strong enough to take on the whole game and then it is really wholeheartedly fun. There are five or six different endings, so a replay is worth it. Atomfall is really a game for fans and that is something very good. If you want to put yourself positively into the action game years 2009 to 2013, I can only recommend Atomfall to everyone who played Fallout, Stalker with mods or titles like Bioshock or the first State of Decay.
