Necrophosis is a surreal and unreal puzzle/walking game à la Scorn, which is more related to Beksiński’s and Lovecraft’s style (unlike Scorn, which is inspired by HR Giger). In addition to interesting poetic texts and themes, which have recently been well translated into German, Necrophosis still offers very shallow puzzles and a little exploration of the six small level areas. I would like to see the game as a work of my own, but by the "big brother" Scorn, which is located in the same genre, I will unfortunately have to draw comparisons. And in almost all categories, necrophosis lags behind. You can see that only one dev worked on the game. Animations, textures, sounds, setting etc. everything seems very indie. But this also gives the game a certain charm and honestly hardly matters. Still, some polishing would have done the game quite well. A few achievements are bugged, the performance is so lala and some sounds sound straight from Doom 64 ripped. Nevertheless, I had fun with the game, especially through the rather short game time. The puzzles are simple and the levels small, yet exploring them a certain thirst for more. To want to see more mysteries, more of this dystopian and sad world. I like the setpieces better than Scorn. Each of the levels draws different colors and themes onto the monitor. The story is, genre-typical I would almost say, mysterious and indirectly held. We wake up in a desert valley and have to run to where exactly we do not really know but we have a mission; Find out what has so devastated this world and maybe even escape it. In my opinion, the game indirectly criticizes religions and the forgetting of those who cannot speak for themselves to stand up for themselves. The story plays with the fact that you destroy everything in your way, under the premise that it is God-willed and you find your own absolution. Finally, through Chtulu’s help, you ascend to the deity yourself and destroy the rest of the living world so that the Great Ancients can descend to the imagined world, so a good old Lovecraft story. Overall, Necropholis is a harmonious and quite short puzzle game, with easy puzzles and shallow horror elements but also a very good soundtrack and a mysterious and poetic story. For just under 12€ in the sale, or for the marginally higher full price, I can recommend the game to fans of abstract games. The Dev already has with The Shore a similar and quite good walking game in horror or Mysterygenre released and here with Necropholis again set a stage. So one can hope that the next work, then again better.
