Oh yes Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown where to start with you. From a game I was so much looking forward to, I would have expected much more. I loved Test Drive Unlimited 2. For me, the game had exactly what makes an open-world racing game. An open world where you could just drive around, enjoy your cars and immerse yourself in another world. When Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown was announced, my anticipation was correspondingly great. I pre-ordered the game blindly because I wanted to see how the series continues after all these years. On the day of release came the great disillusionment. I couldn’t even connect to the servers and not start the game right at all. Especially if you have been looking forward to a successor for years and spend money on it, this is an absolutely frustrating start. I find the online compulsion particularly disappointing. Why do I have to be permanently connected to the servers if I just want to drive alone through the game world? In a game that lives so much from free exploration and your own driving feeling, that makes little sense to me. Even worse was that you could not even play solo directly at the beginning. Instead, you had to wait an annoying countdown before races, while the game tried to fill the lobby with other players. Whether you wanted to drive with others at all did not matter. For me, this was simply unnecessary and slowed down the fun of the game even before the actual race. What makes me particularly sad is the comparison with Test Drive Unlimited 2. I had hoped to experience this special feeling again, to drive my dream cars through an open world and just enjoy the atmosphere. Instead, my anticipation was destroyed by technical problems and design decisions that I still cannot understand. Maybe other players will find their joy in Solar Crown, and I don’t want to deny anyone the fun of it. For me personally, however, the disappointment outweighs so much that I can hardly say anything positive about the game. Conclusion For me, Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is one of the biggest disappointments of recent years. I blindly pre-ordered the game because I trusted the series and looked forward to the return of one of my favorite racing games. Instead of a successful successor, I got server problems on the release day, an annoying online compulsion and a gameplay that annoyed me even before the first race. Maybe I had too high expectations because of my love for Test Drive Unlimited 2. Nevertheless, I think that one can expect more with such a successor.
