Gears of War: E-Day perfectly shows me why Gears is still the best cover shooter. After the open-world areas from Gears 5, which I couldn’t relate to, although the game was otherwise strong, the return to the roots of the series is exactly what I wanted. Brutal gunplay, an incredibly good atmosphere, spectacular staging and above all focused, linear level design. I find the occasional hub areas completely fine, as they do not slow the flow of the game like in Gears 5. And you can finally jump! Crazy! This actually makes the gameplay a good bit smoother. E-Day does not reinvent the wheel, but it does not have to. It just does a hell of a lot right and reminds me why I love this series so much. This is what Gears of War must feel like. Who is on action, does not actually pass this game. And since E-Day tells the history of the series, you do not need any previous knowledge. Even those who have never played a Gears of War can easily get in here.
