Sonic Hacking Spotlight - July 26th, 2024

Flickyhack is a unique and challenging ROM hack of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis. Unlike standard hacks, its core mechanic revolves around avoiding the Flickies, when you destroy a Badnik, the liberated Flickies become hostile "turncoats" that actively attack Sonic rather than helping him.

Giovanni's Level Pack 2 is a ROM hack of Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis. Rather than overhauling mechanics, this hack focuses on providing high-quality, "classic-style" level design across three completely redesigned zones: Lunar Harbor, Burning Wood, and The Final Fight.

Sonic the Hedgehog: Proto-Mix is a ROM modification for the 2013 mobile/RSDK version of Sonic the Hedgehog. The hack is defined by its objective to "mix" the high-speed gameplay of the final 1991 release with rare, scrapped elements found in early prototype builds and magazine scans.

Sonic 2 Addendum it aims to create an enhanced, definitive version of the original game by restoring and reimagining content from unused beta versions and prototypes, alongside adding modern quality-of-life improvements.

The project reimagines the original West Side Island adventure with a narrative focused on Dr. Robotnik’s "terraformation scheme," which has transformed classic zones into surreal, expanded environments filled with new secrets and branching paths.

Sonic CD Restored is a speedrun mod that restores lost Sega CD speerun routes and features back to the game as well as polishes the video/audio/gameplay by restoring fidelity, fixing bugs, and providing small quality of life improvements. These changes do not move away from the spirit of the original game, so there aren’t new gameplay features like Flight Cancel...however Time Travel Overhaul is incorporated with permission purely because it was the original game designers’ intent for No Loading Time Travel to be featured. This has also been tweaked and polished to be as closely representative of how Sega would have made it work themselves.

“Sonic The Hedgehog 2: Archives” is ‘another beta hack’ that seeks to bring back cut content from the game's Prototypes, revitalize the game's concept and release levels and badniks, and fully recreate the early concept of the time-travel story. Along with this hack improves both the prototype content and the final content by adding new animations, badnik and character shots, level art and backgrounds, new music, and more.

Sonic the Hedgehog: A New Adventure is a ROM hack of the original 1991 game for the Sega Genesis. The project centers on a unique narrative where Sonic and Tails explore a reality-distorted South Island following the escape of a trapped, god-like chinchilla entity.

Sonic: Christmas Trouble is a festive, high-quality ROM hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis. First released for the Sonic Hacking Contest 2017, the project is a complete seasonal overhaul that replaces the standard levels with winter-themed environments.
